“It’s hard to do rural research when you’re sitting in St. John’s — not that it’s a wrong thing to do, it’s just a different view,” Patey said. “So, we’ve taken it with the idea that we want to bring people out and do stuff that comes from the front line in our community out here in Carbonear and surrounding areas.”

"It's exciting, it's humbling, it's exhausting – it's a lot of things," says Mr. Norman, the registered nurse at Carbonear. "But I think this whole project really shows the incredible power of research and collaboration. The SurgeCon future looks bright."

"As soon as this food fishery came around — clinically anyway — in the front line we're saying, 'Wow, like, they just keep coming in.' What we found was an interesting mix of patients. There's kids that show up, there's 90-year-olds that show up and then there's everyone in between that as well."
